Homeopathy for Your Garden

Around ten years ago I was friends with the author of the book Homeopathy for Farm and Garden and met him for a coffee a couple of times. He was a Dutch man and had changed his name to Vaikunthanath Das Kaviraj.  

Giving homeopathic medicines to trees and plants is known as Agro-homeopathy, making them stronger and healthier, just as you would for humans. It is a non-toxic, inexpensive and residue free alternative, rather than using chemicals, fertilisers and pesticides.

The author 'Kaviraj', as he was known, first discovered that homeopathy worked on the plant kingdom when he saved an apple tree from dying and which subsequently produced delicious apples.  The story is in the review. Here is a very nice review of the book.

I told Kaviraj about my Mother's dark red heritage roses which have a beautiful scent and that I had been given after her death in 2012. I told him they had black spots on the leaves and tiny aphid insects all over them. I was worried they would die.  He told me to give them the homeopathic remedy Belladonna.  

I gave them Belladonna 6c and soon after the black spots on the leaves disappeared and so did the aphids!  The leaves became dark green and shiny and the roses were beautiful again!  I was extremely pleased and 2 years later gave them another dose.  Now every 2 years I give them Belladonna 30c (a higher dose) and it has kept them alive and well.

I take a measuring glass jug, put one remedy pill at the bottom, crush it to a powder with the back of a teaspoon and then fill the jug with mineral water.  (I don't water them with tap water). Then you simply pour the whole jug of water with the remedy onto the roots of the roses (or plant/tree) and it works, as I say, for about 2 years.

I don't grow vegetables or fruit so I don't know the best remedies for these but you can buy Homeopathy for Farm and Garden in a number of online places. Just Google the title.  Some prices are high but you can get the book at a lower price on Ebay and Abe Books.  

Aphids and slugs can be deterred using the remedy Helix Tosta or Silica.  I would suggest low potencies such as the 6c or 30c. Bacterial or fungal blights - again it says Belladonna and for root rot use Calcarea Phosphorica. 

If you are repotting your plants and they might suffer from transplant shock you can give them Arnica 30c for shock or Calendula 30c for any physical damage. There is more information on remedies for plants if you scroll down to page 8 of this pdf magazine.

So the only experience I have of Agro-homeopathy is with my Mother's roses, but it is about 13 years since they nearly died and I was told to use Belladonna, and they have been flourishing ever since! I wish I had known about it in the last place I lived, which had a very old apple tree that hardly bore fruit!

Anyway, I usually buy all my homeopathic remedies from Helios Homeopathic Pharmacy, where you can order them online. 

Incidentally, this rather blows up the theory of homeopathy only working through the placebo effect!  In addition, homeopathy works wonderfully on animals too!

Essential Children's First Aid Remedies

There are certain remedies that are extremely useful in an emergency and you should keep in your bathroom cupboard when your child has an accident.

The first of these is ARNICA.  You can get the Arnica cream to apply to the skin for bruises but the homeopathic Arnica remedy is far more effective. Buy Arnica 200c and Arnica 30c, depending on how serious the accident.

For a very bad bruise to the soft tissue, i.e. thighs, buttocks, abdomen give one dose of the 200c potency.

If your child has a bad head injury, Arnica is invaluable, even if slightly concussed. Arnica 200c is the first remedy to be given in any head injury.  It will bring up the bump and then heal it very quickly. 

Arnica 30c is also the remedy for a sprained ankle, for a pulled muscle as well.  It can also be given for whiplash in a car accident.  It is a very versatile remedy!

You will find that children love taking homeopathic remedies, as they taste nice and sweetish, are very small and do not need to be swallowed, just sucked! For this reason they might want to take more! It is very important not to give more than one 200c but two 30c can be given.  The point is when the remedies work, no more need to be given as homeopathic remedies keep working long after they are taken.

For blows to the actual bones, you will need Ruta Grav 30c. For example once a child had a hard ball hit her nose and she was better very quickly with Ruta Grav and when I say quickly for Arnica and Ruta, I mean within a few hours!

For broken bones or just a fracture of the bone, you can give Symphytum 200c and the bone will knit together fast. Symphytum is the herb Comfrey or Knitbone, made into a homeopathic remedy.

For less serious bumps and blows you can rub the Bach Flower Rescue Remedy Cream on them, which works very well.  

Bach Flower Rescue Remedy Cream can be used for burns.  Rub the cream on thickly and there will be no mark on the skin from the burn.

Rescue Remedy Cream is also very good for insect bites. One friend of mine was stung by an African bee in South Africa and I had given her a tube of the cream.  It was a Sunday and she tried everything, then used the cream which worked perfectly, giving great relief and healed the sting.

Rescue Remedy Cream will get rid of the itchiness after any insect bite.

Rescue Remedy Cream is excellent for Chicken Pox!  When the spots have come up and then become extremely itchy.  I found it much better for children than old fashioned calamine lotion that was used in the past. If you put the cream on the spots, they will not be itchy and therefore not scratched, which would leave a small lifelong scar. 

Aromatherapy Lavender Oil is another absolutely invaluable thing to have in your first aid cupboard! If your child has a bad cut which is bleeding, get them to the bathroom, drop about 8 drops of lavender oil into the wash basin or bath.  Fill it with warm water.  Get cotton wool or a wad of cosmetic pads.  Soak this in the lavender water and bathe the cut.  So the lavender is Antiseptic and will kill off all germs.  It should stop the bleeding.  You will find the next day the cut is almost completely healed.  Lavender heals really fast!  Also it is very soothing for your child to breathe in.  It will calm your child down after the fright of the injury.

For a wound which is bleeding profusely, you can give the homeopathic remedy Calendula 30c or you can apply Calendula cream on it.  Calendula is also Antiseptic and kills germs. It will stop the bleeding.

Likewise if you have a fractious, bad tempered or over excited child, before bedtime you can run a bath and drop some lavender drops in it and this will calm your child down and help them sleep better.

If your child falls heavily on their coccyx at the end of the spine, bangs their elbow hard or injures it, or crushes their finger tips in the door, the remedy is the big one for Nerve damage, which is Hypericum 30c. The coccyx, elbows and finger tips are places rich in nerve endings.

Splinters will come out very quickly if you give one dose of Silicea 6c. I have seen them come out within 5 minutes of taking this remedy, which ejects foreign objects from the body.  NOT to be used on people who have metal fastenings or hip operations or any foreign object in their body, as the Silicea will try to push them out!

For a child that has repeated blood tests requiring needles, you can give them Ledum 6c, which is a remedy for puncture wounds and it will heal up the needle wounds speedily.

You will find these things are quick and effective and much better than dragging your already traumatised child to Accident & Emergency at the hospital and possibly left to wait for hours.  These things can be dealt with quickly at home. Of course for serious accidents, it is obviously necessary to go and see a doctor immediately.

Homeopathic First Aid Remedies

Since people on Twitter have been talking about avoiding hospitals and treating themselves at home with various things, I decided this morning that I needed to type up the homeopathic first aid remedies.  There are a lot of them and they work extremely effectively and often very fast. It will surprise and amaze you how fast!  

It would be a good idea to buy a Homeopathic First Aid Kit (pictured). This one here from Ainsworths Homeopathic Pharmacy contains lots of remedies.   42 remedies to be precise. Helios Homeopathic Pharmacy also has a first aid kit but with half as many remedies.  The problem is, if you don't have the right remedy in an emergency, it is not much use.  That is why I am recommending the Ainsworth one.

There are so many homeopathic remedies and so many different ones for different illnesses, it can be a bit of a maze to understand, but when it comes to first aid, the remedies needed are usually fairly precise. These are all in my Homeopathy Heals book

Homeopathic Remedies for Tooth Extractions

One of the most invaluable things you can use after going to the dentist, is homeopathic remedies.  In practically an instant you can get rid of that pain and rest easy after dental work.  Homeopathic remedies can work really fast.  Unlike paracetomol, they don't wear off, where you have to keep taking more.  Once the remedy works, that's it, the pain is gone!

The main remedies you will need to have on standby are the following:  Arnica 30c, Hypericum 30c, Calendula 30c and Ledum 30c.  Remedies should always be stored in a cool, darkened place, away from strong smells such as eucalyptus, camphor, etc.

Please note: if you have an injection to numb your teeth for filling or extraction, make sure you take two Activated Charcoal capsules afterwards in order to remove all the toxicity from the injection, as I am informed these injections are very toxic.  Activated Charcoal can be bought easily in health shops or on Amazon.  They are very useful to have in your medicine cabinet and have been known to help food poisoning and hangovers, among other things!

Arnica 30c (Leopard's Bane)

This is for bruising of the gums after extraction of teeth or new fillings, especially molars.  It is specifically indicated after the removal of Wisdom Teeth.

Hypericum 30c (St. John's Wort)

Hypericum is for the pain you experience after any of your teeth have been extracted.  Hypericum is a nerve remedy and all pain is felt via the nerves.

Calendula Officinalis 30c (Marigold)

People may be surprised to learn that you can actually buy the remedy Calendula in pill form, as they may only know of Calendula cream, available in health shops.  Yes, it comes in pill form as well.

This is a great remedy for two reasons.  It stops the bleeding and it quickly heals up the wound where the tooth has been extracted.  Obviously, in all the above cases, one dose of a remedy will work on the whole mouth, if for example more than one tooth has been taken out.

Ledum 30c (Marsh-Tea)

Ledum is the remedy for puncture wounds, so it can be used when your mouth is still hurting after the dentist gave you that injection to numb your gums before your tooth was taken out.   It can also be used if you had an injection before some deep cleaning with the hygienist.  After the numbness wears off, you may still be experiencing pain at the site of the injection and Ledum will heal and get rid of the pain immediately.

Incidentally, it is a very good idea to take a couple of Charcoal capsules after a numbing injection, as this will clear out of your body all the nasty toxins in it.

Staphysagria 30c (Stavesacre)

This was a very good one for me once when I had root canal work done.  I was in agony afterwards and this remedy got rid of the pain quite speedily.  I had felt rather bullied by the dentist and somewhat overwhelmed by him.  He had made a bad job of it and I was in extreme pain.

I would also not recommend root canal fillings if you can avoid them.  They often trap bacteria for years, which can cause problems in other parts of the body.

Lachesis 6c (Surucucu)

This is a powerful remedy and should only be taken in low potency, such as a 6c.  It is extremely useful for molars, specifically on the left hand side, with the pain occurring in the middle of the night.  I had excruciating pain and inflammation in a top left hand back tooth, and after trying various remedies such as Belladonna, Lachesis cured it promptly.  It happened on Christmas Eve, so I was very lucky to be all better for the next day!
